What is EXIF data?
Cameras and phones store extra information inside each photo. This is called EXIF metadata. It often includes the exact GPS coordinates where the photo was taken, the date and time, the camera or phone model, and sometimes the editing software or the owner's name. Anyone who gets the original file can read it.
Some social networks remove this data when you post. Many other routes keep it, such as email attachments, chat apps sending "original quality" files, cloud-drive links, marketplaces, forums and your own website. Removing it before you share is a simple privacy habit.
How this tool works
- Choose your photos. The tool reads them on your device and lists what it found. Location data is highlighted.
- It removes EXIF, XMP, IPTC, comments and text blocks without re-compressing the image. The picture itself is byte-for-byte the same, so there's no quality loss.
- Download the clean copies. Your original files are not changed.
Two things are kept on purpose. The color profile is kept so colors look the same. For JPG photos that were taken sideways, the rotation flag is kept so the picture still displays upright. Neither one identifies you.
Why no upload matters here
A tool that uploads your photo to remove its location data has already sent that location to a server. This page never does that. The processing is JavaScript running in your browser, and the page's security policy stops it from sending data to any server. After the page loads, you can go offline and it still works.
Questions
Will this reduce the image quality?
No. Only the metadata sections are removed. The compressed image data is copied unchanged. To also make the file smaller, use Compress image.
Does it work for iPhone HEIC photos?
Not yet. Share or export the photo as JPG first. On iPhone, sharing to Files or email usually offers JPG.
How can I check that it worked?
Drop the clean copy back into this tool. It should say "No metadata found".
Does it remove faces or visible content?
No. It removes hidden data only. Anything visible in the picture, like a street sign or a house number, stays.
