Add page numbers to a PDF

Stamp "1 / 12", "Page 1" or a plain number onto every page and save, on your own device. No upload

How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose or drop your PDF file.
  2. Pick a format (like 1 / 12 or Page 1) and where it goes on the page.
  3. To skip a cover page, set "Start numbering at page" to 2. The first number stamped is still labelled 1, unless you change "First number".
  4. Click Add page numbers and save. The result downloads as name-numbered.pdf.

Skip a cover page or title page

Reports and theses often number the body pages but not the cover. Set "Start numbering at page" to the first page that should show a number, e.g. 2 or 3; earlier pages are left blank.

Nothing else changes

The page number is added as a small extra line of text; existing text, images, links and form fields are copied exactly as they are, not re-rendered or recompressed. Title, author and software details from the original file are not copied.

Private by design

This page reads and writes the PDF with JavaScript in your browser, and its security policy stops it from sending data to any server. There's no account, no watermark and no file limit.

Questions

Why won't my PDF open here?

Password-protected (encrypted) PDFs can't be numbered. Open the file in a PDF reader with its password and save or print an unprotected copy first, if you're allowed to. The tool tries to repair a damaged file index automatically.

Can I use my own text, like a filename or date?

Not yet — this tool only stamps a number (in one of the formats above), which keeps it fast and avoids uploading a font. For a watermark with your own text, use Add a text watermark on an image, or convert the page to an image first with a PDF viewer.

Can I rotate, merge or reorder pages too?

Yes: Rotate PDF, Merge PDF and Reorder PDF Pages are separate tools, so run this one first or last depending on what you need.

Are bookmarks and forms kept?

Page content, links and comments are kept. Bookmarks (the outline sidebar) are not carried over, and fillable form fields stay visible but may no longer be editable.
